European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial news:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
