The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
