A defense minister has stated that the MoD is actively looking into the potential threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been told to refrain from talking about classified information in all cars.

Safety Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to discuss secret material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a issue in every contemporary vehicles.

We have a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret level in any car, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Defence Context

The announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

The broader defence situation underscores the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in every areas of government operations, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
