Approximately fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered many other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police say initial examinations show the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no indication as to its source; authorities are presently not informed of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking representative commented the vandalism left him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
