Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
