Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the ability to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
